EFEF JIP is scheduled into the following four working phases:


Phase I - Literature survey, resource identification and definition of detailed scope of work for the whole project in terms of fire and gas explosion events in FPSO installations.
The objective of this phase is to review available literature in order to establish the state-of-the-art and best practices in the subject matter. In addition, contact will be established with all relevant academic and industrial projects in order to incorporate available results of these projects into the EFEE JIP.
Detailed scope of work for the project has to be established based on the literature survey.
The results of Phase I must be applied for the identification of likelihood (frequency) of gas explosion and fire accidents that will be employed for the risk assessment in the later phases.


Phase II-1 - Hydrocarbon explosion actions and design of FPSO topsides and equipment.
The objective of Phase II-1 is to perform the study aiming at the definition of explosion actions (overpressures and drag forces) using advanced CFD methods. Both scenario-based approach and probabilistic approach will be studied.
Structural modelling techniques for prediction of structural responses and damage (i.e., consequences of the accidents) will be examined.
Analysis procedures and documentation requirements will be established.


Phase II-2 - Fire actions and design of FPSO topsides and equipment.
The objective of Phase II-2 is to perform a study aiming at the definition of fire actions (heat fluxes) using CFD method. Both scenario-based approach and probabilistic approach will be investigated.
Structural modelling techniques for prediction of structural responses and damage (i.e., consequences of fire accidents) will be examined.
Analysis procedures and documentation requirements will be established.


Phase III - Guidelines and engineering handbook (Dissemination).
The objective of this phase is to develop the following:
Guidelines for analysis, design and risk assessment and management of FPSO topsides and equipment against gas explosion events.
Guidelines for analysis, design and risk assessment and management of FPSO topsides and equipment against fire events.
The guidelines will include methodologies in terms of both deterministic and probabilistic approaches.
Technical courses and workshops will be provided to galvanize the knowledge of explosion and fire design of FPSO installations.
An engineering handbook on design of FPSO topsides and equipment to resist explosion and fire hazard will be completed.
